Usage of the male name form 'Yevheniy' in the Ukrainian language
Linguist Olha Vasyliieva explained that the Ukrainian language implies the reduction of the ending '-iy' in male names of Greek origin. Therefore, the correct form of the name is 'Yevhen', not 'Yevheniy'.
'The ending '-iy' in these names is a Russian adaptation of Greek names,' the linguist said.
She also provided examples of other names where this tendency is observed:
- Yevheniy - Yevhen
- Yevstafiy - Ostap
- Afanasiy - Panas
- Hryhoriy - Hryhir
- Prokopiy - Prokip
- Lavrentiy - Lavrin
- Pankratiy - Pankrat
