«Many countries already significantly exceed the 2% threshold. We are very close to reaching a consensus on the commitment to achieve 5% for NATO,» emphasized Hegset on the sidelines of the meeting.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegset spoke about NATO countries approaching a historic agreement to increase defense budgets to 5% of gross domestic product.
The American minister also announced a review of the strategy for deploying U.S. troops in the European region:
«There are reasons why we deployed troops in certain regions, and we respect and understand that. However, it makes sense to reassess together with allies to ensure that the number of [contingents] meets current needs.»
